I installed this in our 2002 Wrangler, and it powers the replacement speakers exceptionally well, delivering plenty of bass (the speakers are Kickers, including the dash, roll bars, and armrest subwoofer). The interface is user-friendly, and the instructions are straightforward for adjusting sound, Bluetooth, and more. Out of the three units I’ve had in that Wrangler over the years, this one has the best sound quality by far.

I purchased the JVC KD-SX27BT to replace my 2015 Alpine CDE-151, which lacked Bluetooth for hands-free phone calls. The Bluetooth functionality works well with my iPhone, and the sound quality of the stereo is satisfactory. The radio bands operate as expected, and while I assume the Aux In would function properly, I haven’t tested it. After setting the clock during installation, it only lost the setting once, but since resetting it, it has remained accurate. The EQ offers several presets and a manual setting, but overall, I’m disappointed with the JVC stereo.

The setup menus are confusing and difficult to navigate. Strangely, the button to access the menu is a tiny one located on the far right of the main button row, smaller than my pinky pad, while the button for going back a level is similarly small and on the left end. Both buttons serve multiple functions depending on the context. Additionally, the phone control button, situated below the volume knob, is hard to see while driving.

I’ve struggled to get the search function to work effectively for navigating folders of albums on my flash drive. When I insert a USB drive, the stereo plays each folder in order, but I can’t figure out how to jump to a specific folder using the search function. I’ve read the operating manual multiple times, but it doesn’t seem to align with the actual functionality, leaving me to cycle through songs or albums using the forward and backward buttons. The search button I mentioned earlier is the small one on the left, which might require a specific action that isn’t clearly explained in the manual.

The most frustrating aspect is the lack of a straightforward way to adjust the bass, mid, treble, balance, or fade without diving into the Audio Settings menu, which involves navigating those tiny buttons and backing out of each adjustment. In contrast, my old Alpine had a simple AUDIO button that allowed me to cycle through settings with ease, making adjustments while driving much safer.

While the display is bright, it doesn’t present information as clearly as my Alpine did. My previous stereo consistently showed the folder and track number, with group, album, and song title available with a simple button press. The JVC seems to vary the displayed information, often leaving out the folder number altogether. I enjoy listening to my extensive USB music collection while driving, so this is quite disappointing.

Ultimately, I’ve decided my Alpine stereo is superior and will reinstall it in my car. I’ve also ordered a standalone Bluetooth unit that clips onto my visor and includes speakers, a mic, and controls for hands-free calling with my iPhone. When a call comes in, I’ll just pause the Alpine music manually and tap the Answer button on the Bluetooth unit. I should have considered this solution sooner; there’s no need to involve the car stereo for phone calls.

These issues may not bother everyone, but if I were to buy another stereo, I would likely consider brands like Pioneer, Sony, or Kenwood.

I haven’t tried connecting my phone or using anything other than the radio, CD player, and USB, but those features work as expected. My main disappointment is with the backlight for the numbered keys used for switching radio stations. The blue light makes the numbers nearly impossible to see in daylight, no matter how dimmed. Additionally, I found out from the manual’s fine print that this model does not allow for changing the screen color, so you’re stuck with a blue and white background, while the numbered keys have a darker hue. Overall, it’s a decent stereo for the $80 I paid.

This unit looks and sounds fantastic, and I had no trouble installing it in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler TJ. Overall, I’m very satisfied with it. The startup can be a bit slow, and I occasionally experience minor connectivity issues with Bluetooth. However, most of the time, it connects automatically and performs as expected. It has many more positive features than drawbacks, and it sounds amazing with my current setup. The hands-free microphone works adequately. Overall, this is a great unit and definitely a worthwhile investment for something affordable that meets most of my needs.

    Naomi L Reuven

This is an outstanding unit for the price. Bluetooth pairs in just 5-10 seconds after starting the car, and it has significantly enhanced the sound quality in my Camry. My only issue is with the main power/potentiometer button used for navigating menus and making adjustments. It feels quite flimsy and often skips or fails to register when I’m trying to make changes.

I upgraded the factory radio in my ’99 Avalon with this unit. It performs excellently and significantly enhances the sound quality!

  7. 3 out of 5

This unit offers a variety of features and delivers good sound quality. Installation is straightforward. However, there are a couple of drawbacks. The two key control buttons are quite small and positioned awkwardly. Additionally, the radio buttons lack illumination. Upon initial setup, you are required to select either a 2-way or 3-way speaker configuration, and there seems to be no way to change this later if you decide to switch speakers. Lastly, there are no options to fine-tune the sound for front/rear or left/right balance—only vague, pre-programmed settings. Overall, not ideal.

Simple to set up and user-friendly. Delivers great sound.

Installation was a breeze, and it fits like a glove. There are numerous options available to customize the audio settings.
